Doing the Work of the Church
Our 2020 Pledge campaign, Giving for the Future is well underway. And you may have already filled out your Pledge card and turned it in. I’ve done ours and dropped it off at the Church Office.
You probably also know that as part of our Pledge Campaign this year we are holding Casita Meetings, opportunities for you to talk about the Future of our Church. I attended one of those last week. It was primarily for people who have recently joined our Church.
It was exciting to hear these new members talk about their previous experiences with Unitarian Universalism and the new ideas and insights that they brought. I also heard their concerns about growing our Congregation, especially with young families.
Like many of you, I’ve always encouraged growth. So listening to these new folks got me thinking about it, again. Why do we need more people? Is it just to fill the seats? Or is it to pay the bills? I don’t think so.
You remember our new Vision statement, which we voted to adopt this year? We are a transformational Force for Love and Justice in Our Community. In other words, as a Church we are working to transform ourselves and Las Cruces. I’m sure that many people here in our city know about the good works that we do. But I don’t think that’s enough. They must also be made aware of the spiritual grounding that underlies our work.
I believe it’s up to each one of us to reach out to the members of our Community with the Good News of Unitarian Universalism. And we must let them know that there is room for them here in our Church. Then we will grow, together.
See you in church Sunday,
Charlie Scholz, President, Board of Directors
