March 2008 Roundtable Topics

UU Roundtable

Education never ends.  Come learn with us.  We have discussions, not arguments.  Our goal is to learn more about all sides of issues and to learn more about one another.  If you have a topic you would like discussed, contact Jim Basler. The Roundtable meets at 10:30 am on Sundays in the Library.

March 2 - Tara Gray: The Story of the NMSU Teaching Academy. Tara will tell us how it provides training, mentoring and networking to NMSU educators. These educators are helped by the Academy to have extraordinary teaching careers embedded in exceptional lives.

March 9 - John Lazaruk: The Costs of the Iraq War John, a former economic analyst with the Army, will share with us information on the cost to both American and Iraqi societies of the Iraq war and occupation. We usually think of cost in terms of dollars, but there are other more important consequences to out actions in the so called War on Terror. We will explore some of them in the spiritual, social and economic areas of life in both the US and Iraq.

March 16 - Stan Ediger: Today's Energy Much of today's energy crisis, and it is a crisis, can be traced to bad decisions made years ago.

March 23 - Susan Bagby: A Travelogue of her Recent Visit to Croatia

March 30 - Joel Brown: Environmental Justice –Sharing the Wealth Theseventh principle of UUs is “respect for the interconnected web of life.” A key element of that principle is the fair and just distribution of the bounty of nature. Much of human history has been built on the unfair and unjust garnering of natural resources for a select few, depriving the poor. We will explore some of the new philosophies and technologies being applied toward helping to redress the inequities in resource distribution.
